Kimberley, B.C continues to make a name for itself as being one of the greatest places to ski alpine, cross country as well as back country in Western Canada. Already well known for Kimberley Alpine Resort’s downhill skiing, it’s also home to one of the best Nordic Centre’s, the Kimberley Nordic Club, maintaining a network of 30 plus kms of trails. Additionally this year the resort is also now home to being one of the best places to stage from for a backcountry ski tourism experience with Boulder Hut Adventures.
Boulder Hut Adventures are a backcountry guide company offering up the opportunity to gain access to some of the best backcountry terrain in the Purcell mountain ranges. They’re one of the original post war privately held ski lodges in the province and now guests will be able to begin and end their ski touring lodge experience from the base of Kimberley Alpine Resort, giving them a chance to also enjoy the resort’s 1800 acres of downhill terrain during their stay.
So what is ski touring?
Ski Touring is a form of skiing in which both uphill and downhill travel are possible without needing to remove skis. Skis, bindings, boots and climbing skins allow for the free movement of the heel to enable a walking pace, as in Nordic and unlike alpine skiing. The terms “backcountry” and “off-piste” refer to where the skiing is being done, while terms like ski touring, ski mountaineering, telemark, and extreme skiing describe what type of skiing is being done. Terms for backcountry skiing exist according to how the terrain is accessed, and how close it is to services. Frontcountry, slackcountry and sidecountry are similar but skiing in remote areas not within ski area boundaries is the essence of backcountry ski touring.
Boulder Hut Adventures offers a full week or a new half week backcountry package, where you, along with your friends or family (Boulder Hut makes it safe for nearly all ages) enjoy accommodation, meals, ski touring and one of the best ski vacations you can imagine.
